Winterfat (a.k.a., White Sage, Winter Sage, Feather Sage, Sweet Sage) is a valuable Winter "browse" plant for free-range animals (both wild and domestic) because of its high crude protein content, by which it helps adult animals to maintain healthy body weights throughout the colder months. This photo shows Winterfat in several stages of its life cycle, including its most dramatic depicted by the "furry" or "fuzzy" white stalk in the middle of the image. I'd long wondered why such an attractive-looking Fall-Winter plant had such an unflattering name . . . and now I know why!

I guess so, Gail . . . more than I ever knew! I just wondered why it had such an unflattering name, because it's really an attractive plant in what is often an otherwise quite barren landscape.
