In Kinderdijk, Netherlands Kinderdijk has been an UNESCO World Heritage since 1997 You won’t find a windmill complex like Kinderdijk anywhere else in the world. The ingenious system of windmills and pumping stations has been keeping the soil dry here for nearly a thousand years now, in a constant struggle between human brains and the power of water.Time
It was just after the lunch. When we arrived in Kinderdijk in the morning, there was a lot of fog and clouds, so we decided to have lunch before visiting this amazing placeLighting
The sky was dark and grey with a lot of clouds at the beginning of the day. I love when the clouds are so heavy because the light is smoother, even in the afternoon.Equipment
Sony A850 with Zeiss 16-35 mm F2.8. Mounted on a Manfrotto tripod for more stability.Inspiration
The beauty of those mills and the peaceful mood out there, I wasn’t rushed and I tried just to place everything in the rules of third with the diagonals of the river but I really wanted the reflexion on the water in opposition of the dark sky.Editing
I did the first setup in Lightroom and after this I imported the raw files on Nik Silver effects, I created some plugin of my own for this kind of picture with heavy clouds. After NiK, I had to do some hard work because there’s a lot of white halo contouring the mills and I had to work for more than 6 hours to correct this glitch. In my camera bag
At this time I had two full frame Sony Cameras, an SLT A99 mounted with a 70-200 f2,8 Sony G lens and a Sony A850 with my favourite lens, a Zeiss 16-35mm f2,8. And a 50mm Sony f1,4 Two strap, one full kit from Peak Design and a double strap from Black Rapid My iPhone 8+ and a Sony A57 complète sometime my bag.Feedback
This place is particular, incredibly amazing, so be respectful of the environment. It’s not so far from Rotterdam but you should come early in the morning because I was pretty lucky at that time of the day. Also, my advice would be to rent a bike and stay all day long because the sunset is really amazing too.
