Location
This was taken on a model night at HD Studio in Newcastle. The model is Karla Watt.Time
Karla had just changed and settled onto the leather sofa and I was first photographer to shoot her which turned out to be a challenge as i'd not seen what worked well, and she hadn't found a comfortable position to recline in. I wanted to make the most of her long dancer's legs so scooted her to one end of the couch but most of the shots looked pretty uncomfortable as the arm of the sofa was at an awkward angle. Even this one had her straining her neck, but by rotating the image to this angle it becomes less obvious in the shot.Lighting
Lighting was pre-set by the studio owners so I can't remember much about the set upEquipment
Canon 5d mkIII 24-70 f2.8 lens. I shot handheld and was leaning over a metal rail on a raised platform to shoot downwards at KarlaInspiration
I think the inspiration is self evident in the subject matter! Seriously though, model nights are a good way to get a range of portfolio images, although lots of others will have the same models in the same outfits in similar poses. You will also get a good number of images if you're looking to try different processing techniques. In this case I came back to the images I shot that night some weeks after the event which is when I saw the potential for this shot that I'd missed originally.Editing
black and white conversion in Photoshop, plus vignetting and cloning to repair corners damaged by rotating out of original composition. In my camera bag
For an evening like this I'd use my 24-70mm predominantly as it gave me the option to shoot wide as here, but also some closer shots. I also used a 70-200mm elsewhere in the studio where there was more space .Feedback
Give it time before you delete unused shots and revisit your portfolio with new eyes. You might find a gem or two with new eyes.
