Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in the town of Queenscliff, situated inside Port Philip Bay. The town is home to a large number of birds but predominantly the Pelican which is my favourite.

Time

Dawn allows for the sunrise over the fishing fleet and the birds that live nearby.

Lighting

This photo was cropped to give prominence to the main subject, so there is only a sprinkle of early morning reflection on the water which was as flat as a mirror.

Equipment

I was experimenting with my, then new Canon 80D. I think that I was using Canons walkabout lens, the 24-105mm, hand held, natural light

Inspiration

Early morning in Queenscliff was very still, almost motionless across the sea. The pelican was the only thing moving pushing a silent bow wave ahead of itself. It demanded a photo.

Editing

While I look back on the original photo, perhaps I should show that one too. But my submission was cropped to fill the screen with the movement of the bird as it glided over the water.

In my camera bag

Because I live nearby to the sea, I usually have my 80D, the 24-105mm but I may also take a tripod and filters to capture the rising sun. Now and then the 100-400mm will get in the bag to shoot some birds that are just a bit too far for my walkabout lens.

Feedback

A lot of my shots are taken at dawn or dusk so get up early or stay late. For me, the blue or golden hours are the best time to get stunning photos.
