Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a hike to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon, just outside of Salt Lake City.

Time

It was mid morning, probably about 9am, just as the sun was getting down into the little valley I was in.

Lighting

Out of nowhere, a small amount of dark clouds started rolling in. I was pretty disappointed, because this shot was not my goal, instead it was to get a photo of Donut Falls at the top of the trail. It started raining quite hard for a while and then all of a sudden the sun came through the clouds. I am so happy I stopped and took my camera out of my bag, because the rain stopped shortly after I got this shot.

Equipment

This was shot handheld, with a Canon 1DX and a 70-200 lens, near 200mm.

Inspiration

Just being in the right place at the right time inspired me to take this photo. As it always seems to happen with landscape photography, you just need to get outside and let your environment present itself to you.

Editing

This was processed in Lightroom. Nothing too crazy, just a bit of contrast and saturation to really make the lighting and colors pop.

In my camera bag

First of all, the most important thing is having my 1dx body with a wide lens and a telephoto. Usually my wide is a 16-35mm 2.8 and my telephoto is a 70-200mm 2.8. I also always carry ND filters just in case I find a hidden waterfall or something that inspires me to do some long exposures. Last but not least, I never leave home without rain gear in my camera bag!

Feedback

Even if the weather isn't in your favor, or if it is threatening to ruin your shot, make the effort to get out there anyway. You never know, it might just make the photo that you wanted to capture just that little bit better!
