I was just thinking about the Elijah Wood Sin City character when I saw this.

Location
I used to live along the Choptank River and would usually take my senior portrait "kids" to the river because the light was perfect and the river was a big part of everyone's life. My model was very comfy on the little beach and pulled out her shades to help with the glare in her eyes. The mirrored lenses were perfect for the "cool" vibe we were going for and they made it into the shot.Time
This was a late afternoon/dusky shoot and so we were able to get some really great light down by the water.Lighting
As I portrait photographer I'm primarily using natural light and moving around a lot. You always look for locations where there are ways to enhance the light you have, surfaces, etc., that can brighten up a photo. It was summer and the early evening light right around sunset is always so nice. The river which was to my back is also a great way to reflect light back towards the subject, and that's what I was utilizing here in this shot.Equipment
This entire shoot was done using a Nikon D810 and one of a few lenses. I prefer to use my 50mm prime and 24-70mm telephoto for the most part.Inspiration
Finding fresh and fun ways to shoot senior portraits is always a challenge. This small community on the Eastern Shore of Maryland is very river oriented and many of the shots were taken at a small beach near the river.Editing
I usually do a lot of spot checking for anything that may detract from the subject but for the most part I try to frame and compose in camera so there isn't as much to do afterwards. I did tone down some highlights from the mirrored glasses and of course did some blemish removal as well.In my camera bag
I'm a Nikon girl and I have always got a selection of lenses and two camera bodies in my bag. I also carry extra memory cards and batteries and a few other little gadgets that make shooting easier. When I'm shooting at the beach I always have a towel for wet, sandy feet and I usually carry other essentials for taking care of my seniors!Feedback
I think it's important to have an idea of what sort of "shoot" you're going for with seniors. Figure out their passions and what sort of look they are going for. This young lady had a very definite style that I found fresh and exciting and she was really willing to have a lot of fun. If your senior is shy then you have to work differently to get them to open up and be engaging with the camera. Its a lot of work but also a lot of fun, being prepared ahead of time and knowing your senior really makes a difference when it comes to the shoot!
