This photo was taken down the road from where I use to live in a small town in New Hampshire. It is actually a very popular swimming and fishing spot. Everyone calls it the trestle, nothing special. During the warm months just about anytime you go you can see a ton of people jumping off into the water below.Time
The fall of 2013, early morning around 6:30. I have very little time to get out early morning to take photographs and my oldest son, when he lived at home would get up with me and go out. We used it as practice driving time for him and I just had to look around and yell stop haha. It was actually some great time together. The trestle seemed like a great place to explore early morning with no others around. The fog was perfect. I love when something natural like fog makes an appearance because I believe it adds more emotion to any photo.Lighting
The lighting is just before the sun actually comes out. To me this time of day with the fog adds an eerie feeling and for me gives the feelings of alone a more dynamic role in the photo.Equipment
The camera I used was the nikon D5100 Aperture: f/8.0 ISO: 450 Shutter Speed: 10/600 I didn't use a tripod. I actually laid on the track and used the track to still the camera. The track isn't used much if at all any more. So make sure your safe above all else.Inspiration
I was exploring with my son. When I climbed up to the track it just felt right. It reminded me how I often feel alone in a world full of people. It reminded me that we may often travel through life feeling alone but it doesn't mean we can't get through it. So I told my son to go down to the other end and i laid on the track and started shooting.Editing
The only post processing I did to this photo was changing it to black and white. It seemed to add to the image.In my camera bag
Asking what equipment I have in my bag is a loaded question. First I always have basics. lens cleaners, air blower, cloths, and brush. Batteries, I always have two on me. business cards, trash bags to cover my camera etc if I get caught in the rain. I have a few different lens I use but the two that I always have with me no matter what are a 55 mm and 250 mm. Anything else is a bonus. I don't always have my tripod with me. I tend to use what is around me.Feedback
The biggest thing I can say first is SAFETY. Any great photographer will take some risk just don't be stupid about it. This particular photo isn't hard at all. Just find a track you love, make sure it is safe and legal and keep an eye out on weather, pick a morning that fog is likely, bring someone with you that is willing to let you boss them around a little and just have fun. Feel it. If you need to, close your eyes and breathe. Open your eyes and ask yourself, what do you feel with what you see. Don't think about the process of photography. FEEL IT.
