A luminous Jupiter bathed in zodiacal light casts a beam on the umbilically tethered Ophiuchi jewels. There's an uncommon sentence!
This was only a couple of nights ago, I popped out to the beach after dinner, a bright moon not due to rise until 10:30ish so plenty of time for Milky Way gazing. I set up and after a few shots here and there people started arriving in the dark, good to see winter nocturnalism enthusiasts! They lit a fire in the back of the big cave which looked pretty cool, might be able to rummage up a pano of that when I get time.
This scene is a (four rows of nine shots) stitched mosaic. I sat down this morning in an editty type mood, influenced by a chat about airglow on the astro fb yesterday. So I started off with radically different experimental camera raw settings... struggled to contain the enthusiasm of the Milky Way as a result!
I think it has turned out ok, my aim being to accentuate the green and red airglow structures to the maximum. The orange glow to the right is not airglow... it is always there that eye of Mordor Maui rig gas flare .
.
Nikon seize the night!
