I took this photograph when my Dad and my Brother came with our dog, Phooey, to see me at Uni. I was in my first year, so we were all crammed into this very small room. Phooey has always been a very photogenic dog, I wasn't necessarily trying to get a good shot, I just wanted a photo of him on my desk in my room.Time
It would have been around 10am. We were about to take Phooey for a walk around the woodland area near my University.Lighting
I really like the lighting in this photograph. There was a window to the side of him which was letting in some light, which you can see in Phooeys eye reflection. I like that the other side of his face isn't completely dark, you can still see his features and colouring.Equipment
I was sat on my desk chair, leaning forward with my Nikon DSLR. It really was a spur-of-the-moment kind of photograph. I grabbed my camera and took a photo of him, he just happened to look straight at me for a bit which set up a great shot!Inspiration
I really missed seeing my dog often as I had to move away from home to go to University (where I studied Photography) I had just bought two new cameras ( A Nikon DSLR, and a Miranda 35mm Analogue camera) I was just practising with them at the point that this photograph was taken. Like I said previously, I wanted a photo of Phooey on my desk in my room, so it was a mixture between wanting a photo of him and trying out my new camera. If I knew I was going to take a photo of Phooey (and it was going to be a popular one on Viewbug) I would have tidied the background! At the moment you can see my pyjamas on my unmade bed...whoops!Editing
I added a watermark (which I kind of regret) When uploading this photograph, I didn't want anyone to steal it from me as it's of my cute little Jack Russel! So I thought I'd watermark it...I feel it distracts audiences a bit, which is a shame. But other than that, I haven't edited the photograph at all.In my camera bag
I have a very large (and heavy) camera bag which will always have different 35mm film in, a crystal ball, some lens wipes (total necessity), and tissues - for those cold, snotty-nosed photoshoots. I recently bought lots of new lenses, like polaroid filters and macro lenses which I need to do more experimenting with. I also strap a tripod to my bag too, so I can have my hands free.Feedback
Be patient and think about composition. I always think about composition when taking a photograph. Ask yourself, what do you want the audience to focus on? Working with light is great fun, and can make photographs dramatic and atmospheric. Don't over-do it on post-editing, sometimes less is more.
