This photo is of the “Diamond Ring” feature of the Total Solar Eclipse that occurred across America on August 21, 2017.

I traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to capture this photo, and a forecast of afternoon clouds and potential thunderstorms was threatening the viewing experience.
Although the clouds did obscure the sun during parts of the totality period, they also added to the drama and mystique, creating beautiful framing of the event when the sun was visible.

It was a monumental group effort to plan and prepare for this event, and the weather was a real nail-biter. We had to overcome several unforeseen challenges, which makes the capture feel like an even greater victory.
