Sitting on the Acropolis overlooking Athens, the Parthenon is the a reminder of the of the ancient Greek civilization. The Parthenon was constructed as a temple to Athena around 432 BC. It also served as a treasury for the Athenian Empire and was converted to a Christian church in the 6th century AD. After the Ottoman conquest it was converted to a mosque in the 1460. In 1687 it exploded during a Venetian attack on the Ottomans. The last part of the pediment is still present on the east side.
