In all honesty this shot was a fluke. Shot on Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, we had decided to do a series of shots, looking around and setting up lights my model decided it was clear enough to take of her jacket .... as we moved her in to position and and set up lights she looked back at me .... realizing how beautiful she and the scene looked I began snapping, despite a very cold wind and a toward the end of our shoot. Initially I had not selected this shot, when she had gone through them she insisted I edit this one, I'm glad I had the second set of eyes, it truly shows her vulnerability and evokes emotion despite me being unhappy with the lighting when I first looked at it.Time
This was shot close to sundown. We had been on the beach for hours and had tried many different compositions before choosing this one.Lighting
The lighting while not ideal worked. It was on off camera flash set to duplicate the natural light.Equipment
Shot on the Canon 70D, Canon 24-70 lens, tripod and off camera flash.Inspiration
The moment the mood and the model. I'm sure as many photographers know especially in natural light situations it doesn't always work as envisioned. In this situation because of the light tones and chilly mood we came up with something that worked well together.Editing
This is a single shot processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. I did add some light elements to the shot.In my camera bag
This was some time ago, and I've updated to the Canon 5D mark IV. I generally shoot with the USM II 24-70mm Canon lens despite other choices in my bag because of the versatility. In a situation like this (because of the cold conditions and the models exposure to the elements) I chose this lens because of the ability to change composition quickly.Feedback
Planning always help, knowing what you can do with the gear you've got and being able to setup quickly in sometimes difficult elements.
