Awesome shot! Macro shooting is just so fascinating...when we get to ‘see’ things in a photo we never knew existed... great work.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in my home Ramos Mejía. Buenos Aires. Argentina.

Time

I made this photograph at taken 1am, in my small studio . This image was made with the stacking technique of images to achieve the desired depth of field due to the approximation.

Lighting

The lighting setup was using a single flash speelight from above. To achieve this diffuse light, I used butter paper as a modifier, close to the subject.

Equipment

For this shot, I used a Nikon D750 with a 10x magnification microscope. The lighting setup was with a Nikon S900.

Inspiration

Something I have been passionate about for some years now is knowing what we can't see with the naked eye. In the year 2011 with my first camera I've begun to pay attention to every little insect or arachnid that I found and from that moment until today it is still a great passion.

Editing

The post processing of this image is due to the shallow depth of field. To get the depth in the fly's head, work with the technique called focus stacking. A technique that consists of advancing and shooting and then with a software to couple the images and generate the desired depth. The photograph is composed of 149 images.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally use is my Nikon d750 together with a Venus Laowa 60mm macro 2:1 lens. I also have a 50mm and 24mm that I use with an inverter ring to make macros. My tripod with my micrometric track. The flashes are Sb900 + the set of R1-C1. and the remote trigger that is very useful.

Feedback

The best way to understand this kind of photography is understand the different types of magnification. You don't really need a lot of equipment to take a similar picture. With an inverted 35mm and good illumination you can start working on this kind of images. If you take a photo in the field, the first and foremost thing is to be patient, enjoy the moment and prepare all the gear to take the shot.
