Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Pairi Daisa in Belgium. Pairi Daisa is a really big zoo in belgium with a lot of space for the animals to move around.

Time

This was in the late afternoon. I was on my way to the exit as I passed the lake (on the other side was the lions exibit) and saw this lion laying down proudly.

Lighting

The bright midday light was gone and I hat some softer afternoon light. This in combination with some shade creates a nicely balanced picture in my opinion.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon EOS 1300D and the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD macro (pretty old lens but did an amazing job here).

Inspiration

At a zoo the animals are not always in a great position to take pictures. This because of other people visible, fences and other non-natural elements. When I saw this lion in his beautiful pose and with a background that was not occupied with people,… I had to take the picture. It’s all about being at the right place at the right time and then maximizing the present circumstances.

Editing

The edit was pretty simple: Adding a bit of brightness, some contrast and saturation.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon EOS 1300D,SanDisk extreme Pro 64gb memory card, Canon 18-55mm(kit lens), Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 300mm f4 L (I didn't have this at the time and if I did this picture would be taken with it), Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 DI LD macro. Then I also carry a Amazon Basics speedlite with mini softbox, a manfrotto monopod an pixi mini tripod and some cleaning cloth for lenses.

Feedback

The best advice is to be patient and wait for the animals to be where you want them and for other people to be out of your way. Also try to see what animals are going to do. If you see that they are getting ready to jump or something like that you need to be ready because these things are rare.
