Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in the Nubra Valley, in the far north of India. The Nubra Valley is part of the historic Silk Road trade route and leads from Tibet down through Ladakh, into Kashmir.
Time
It was getting towards late afternoon when I took this. The sun was getting lower in the sky, not far from being blocked by the mountains behind. With the low sun, the sand ripple shadows were starting to come out nicely. It was windy though, and shooting on my knees / belly meant getting blowing sand in the face and camera lens.
Lighting
The camels and handlers were coming down a dune and I was down at ground level to get the skies above. At this high altitude (around 5000 m) the light can be quite harsh, so I was hoping to get something quite dramatic.
Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 6D fitted with a 24-105mm f/4 Canon EF lens (it was shot at 28mm).
Inspiration
This was early in my 2016 Ladakh trip. I'd gotten high altitude pulmonary edema in the Changtang range in my 2014 Ladakh trip, so this year was taking a very slow and cautious acclimatization process. Nathan Horton (www.nathanhortonphotography.com) was running an organized photo trip out of Leh the week prior to my backcountry departure, so I thought that would be the perfect start for my trip, helping me to get adjusted to the altitude prior to heading into the high backcountry a week later. Nathan organized this shoot, where we hired 3 camel handlers for the afternoon and spent a lot of time working with them at different angles around some of the higher dunes. The patterns in the sand and the blowing sand (which looks like haze in this photo), both made for an ethereal look.
Editing
I processed this image in both color and monochrome initially and found I much preferred the monochrome. After initial dust spot removal in Lightroom, I processed the photo in three steps: a custom vignette and frequency separation (to get the remnants of dust spots) in Photoshop; working on tonal contrast in Color Efex Pro; and conversion to monochrome (emulating Agfa 100 ISO film) in Silver Efex Pro.
In my camera bag
For this shoot I interchanged a Zeiss Otus 55mm and the Canon 24-105mm on the Canon 6D. I also had a Canon 5DS along, which I keep almost permanently paired with a Zeiss Distagon 21mm. Because I was going to be hiking for 3 weeks in the backcountry, to stay light I only had one small telephoto along, a Canon 70-200mm f/4. After this trip I converted the 6D to infrared and now use a Canon 1DX mk ii as my main body.
Feedback
The dunes in the Nubra Valley are quite limited in extent and there are a lot of Indian tourists going on camel rides. As a result, it takes some care with angles and background to keep others out of view. We had these handlers wear traditional hats but, if you look close, you see that the guy in the middle has very non-traditional sneakers. The Nubra Valley has many great vistas and Buddhist monasteries, so I'd highly recommend a visit. You can either go with a group, as I did on this trip, or simply rent a Land Cruiser and driver out of Leh and go on your own (I have done this before and it is surprisingly economical and allows for more flexible shooting).
