Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the small park near our house. This is where my brother (the subject in this photo) and I walked to every week during the summer.

Time

I honestly can't remember what time of the day this was taken... I remember it was during the weekend and likely mid-day. It was overcast which is my favourite time to shoot.

Lighting

Completely natural lighting setup! No artificial lighting was used during the making of this photo, which gives the shadows from the trees a little more edge.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark III and my 50mm 1.4F lens.

Inspiration

My brother was in town one summer (he was on his summer school break) and I asked him if I could borrow him to model. He eventually obliged so I was able to be as creative as I would like. I wanted a more contemplative look near these trees because I have spent a lot of time thinking while walking through this particular row of trees. It was also a little ironic because he wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his degree in school so he was doing a lot of contemplating too.

Editing

I adjusted the greens of the trees to make them look almost artificial and added more of a colder tint to the photo. I also crushed the black in the shadows by adjusting the dots on my color grid. I did not liquify/alter anything in the photo.

In my camera bag

My handy dandy Canon 5D Mark III, a spare battery, three SD cards (because you never know with those things!!), my 50mm 1.4F lens which is my go-to lens, and if I plan on adventuring a little downtown or in the wild, I bring my 18-40mm for some wider shots.

Feedback

Find a willing subject, a nice row of trees in your local park, make sure the sun isn't too bright (or is hiding behind the clouds) and you will get the same shot! Have fun with it.
