The idea of the photo is to show the magic of mushrooms. I have always been fascinated by this species, neither flora nor fauna. The picture was taken in the forest of my homeland Dickesbach, Germany. I love being in the forest enjoying the peace and tranquillity. You can find there a lot of mushrooms from August to October. The photo was taken during the afternoon with a smooth light. I nearly overlooked the mushrooms on the picture because they are about 1 - 2 cm long. The shown picture is a photo stack out of approx. 30 single images to get a maximum of depth of field. It was my aim to create the most accurate and realistic picture of this composition but still preserving the magic of these strange little friends.

Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in the forest of my homeland Dickesbach, Germany. You can find there a lot of mushrooms from August to November. I nearly overlooked these tiny fellows because they are only about 1 - 2 cm long.

Time

The photo was taken in late summer this year around 5 pm in the afternoon.

Lighting

The described day time creates on sunny days a warm, smooth scattered light shining through the treetops of the forest. I alway make sure that my desired object is never illuminated directly to get soft shadows and natural illumination on my object. This setup is just perfect for a mystical atmosphere. Futhermore I never use any additional flash units, reflectors or torchlights.

Equipment

This was shot on a remote-controlled Fujifim X-Pro2, with a ZEISS Touit 2.8/50M Macro Lens mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

I love being in the forest enjoying the peace of nature and the special atmosphere. The tranquility and loneliness let you feel calm and relaxed, which is perfect for being creative. I have always been fascinated by mushrooms, neither flora nor fauna. It was my aim to create the most accurate and realistic picture of this mushroom composition on the one hand, but preserving the magic of these strange little friends on the other.

Editing

The shown picture is a photo stack out of approx. 30 single images to get a maximum of depth of field.

In my camera bag

Keep it simple. I always try to take as less equipment as possible with me. In the case of macro photography it's only my X-Pro 2, the ZEISS Touit 2.8/50M Macro Lens, a remote control and a tripod and maybe a second wide-angle lens for some forest shots all packed in a light backbag. This setup gives me a great flexibility and mobility. And never forget to wear good shoes!

Feedback

The best time for finding mushrooms is from October to November on warm days after a rain period. The best place is to look in forests or under trees for rotten wood, tree stumps and mossy places. Take your time and look even for the tiniest mushrooms. In my experience a size between 0.5 and 5 cm is just perfect for a macro.
