This image was taken in the highlands of Japan. This is the most northern location that these Macaque can be found giving them the nickname snow monkeys. I spent two days shoots these amazing creatures and on the second day I was lucky enough to have some heavy snowfall throughout the shoot. I came away with some great images but I love the mood of this one. The expression on the face of the animal being groomed while sitting in the hot springs is just pure contentment.

Behind The Lens

Location
This image was taken in the Jigokudani Valley in Japan. This is a protected are for the snow monkeys.
Time
Mid afternoon
Lighting
It was snowing heavily (giant diffuser in the sky) so the lighting was really nice and soft.
Equipment
Canon 5D Mark III ans Canon 70-200 2.8.
Inspiration
The uniqueness of the subjects.
Editing
This image was shot in RAW and I did very minimal processing. Just some white balance and color and lighting correction.
In my camera bag
I specialize in underwater, aerial and high angle work so I have a basic setup for each. I shoot primarily on Canon. A basic travel setup would be: Tripod Canon 5D Mark II and III Canon EF 24-105 Canon 50 mm Macro Canon 70-200 mm Canon Extender 2 III Big Stopper ND filter Remote Trigger Extra batteries, CF cards and tripod attachments
Feedback
Keep you depth of field shallow but play around to make sure you get enough of the foreground and background. Time is always best when working with animals, the more time you spend watching them the more likely you are to capture a unique moment. Always look at your background not just your subject, it can help to highlight your subject and add mood to rhe image.
