Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the sea wall just outside of Cleethorpes train station. The famous steam train The Flying Scotsman had recently returned to service and was going on a 'tour' of the UK pulling specially chartered trips.

Time

It was taken shortly after 7am in the morning. I had debated whether I wanted to make the effort of getting up early enough to get to my vantage point in time. This meant getting up at 5:45am to give myself time to get ready and also time to get to a good viewing spot before too many people had arrived. In fact I arrived early enough to have time to go into Cleethorpes station first to see the train close up. Unfortunately due to the amount of carriages the Flying Scotsman itself was too far away from the platform to see.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the scene more or less as I saw it. However it was very overcast so decided to take plenty of test shots first to make sure I got my settings as close as possible to what I wanted without losing too much detail in the sky.

Equipment

This shot was taken handheld with a Canon 70D with 55-200mm Tamron lens.

Inspiration

I've always been intrigued by the Flying Scotsman since I was a small boy and had a replica poster on my wall growing up. I'd only ever seen it in person once, whilst it was sat in a partially built form during its major 10 year overhaul. It's return to service had been big news and the opportunity to see it not only in the flesh but also in motion was too great to resist. I actually took a burst of photos as it passed me and this was one of three shots that particularly took my eye.

Editing

I used the Canon 70D's wi-fi functionality to transfer some of my favourite shots to my iPad mini. I then found myself beginning to play with them in the Photoshop Express app adding a bit of sharpness and increasing the contrast. Whilst they looked okay in colour they didn't seem to pop until I tried converting them to black & white and this seemed to make a big difference.

In my camera bag

Alongside my Canon 70D I carry Canon's 18-55mm kit lens and 50mm 1.8 prime lens as well as a 55-200mm Tamron telephoto lens. Added to that I have my battery charger and spare battery which always try to ensure is fully charged, basic RF wireless remote, Speedlite 430ex II, and my iPad mini.

Feedback

This was an overcast day and I was only ever going to get one attempt at getting the shot. To prepare I set the focus manually by using the rail line as my focus point. I also took several shots to try and make sure I got my exposure settings as close to acceptable as possible. I finally used a passing diesel train as a practice run before my attempt at the real thing.
