Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a state park near my home in Northern Michigan. It has always been one of the favorite places to shoot and I always try to find new ways to capture there

Time

This was taken at dusk. Me and the model are close friends and we went to 5 or 6 locations in the course of 2 hours and this was our last one. We were both concerned that we had taken too long to get to the beach but I really love how the shot turned out.

Lighting

My worries that the light wouldn't look good went away as soon as I started shooting. The grey ambient light really gave this photo a darker more moody feel and I like how it turned out

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D750 with a 50mm prime lens with no other equipment

Inspiration

I really wanted to take portraits looking down on the model. I think it is an interesting view and it is fun to mix up the angle that you shoot a model

Editing

I did very little in post to this picture. I only brought up the shadows slightly as her face was a little darker than I wanted it to be

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon d750 body in my bag, as well as a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Prime lens. If I'm shooting portraits that is all I need. That combo has got me some incredible shots. If i wanna mix things up I also pack a Nikkor 70-300mm lens. Its huge but I really enjoy using it.

Feedback

The biggest thing with shooting portrait photography of any kind is to make sure your model is comfortable. building a friendship with the people you shoot with makes a big difference. Get to know the people you're taking pictures of. A relaxed model looks way better than a nervous one. Always make sure the model is happy and you'll be happy with your photos
