This one almost didn't happen. The sky didn't look promising for a sunset, but I grabbed the camera and headed out anyway just in case. There's very little post-processing done to this shot. This is a pretty accurate image of what it looked like at its peak.

Location
This was shooting west from the edge of a busy road near where I live. There's a boat dock on the water just to the west of the road, and it makes a nice photo with the trees in the foreground to frame the scene.Time
This was taken in the month of March as the weather was starting to warm up. I'd just taken a similar shot of a sun pillar a month earlier in the same spot. At that time, the water was frozen, and there was a layer of snow on the roof of the boat dock.Lighting
The lighting took care of itself. This is around the time I realized that this type of sunset happens when you have a cloud bank overhead, but there's a break in it towards the horizon. The sun's light will pass through the extra atmosphere as it sets, lighting up the bottom side of the cloud bank.Equipment
This was taken back in the day when all I had was my Canon Rebel T3 and the 18-55mm kit lens.Inspiration
I was out looking for a good shot or two, not expecting the sunset to pan out at all. As I looked for other shots, I noticed the western sky starting to turn a very delightful red color. I immediately headed over toward the boat dock to get set up for a shot of that with the sunset in the background. The irony was that earlier I'd been looking out my window from home and thinking what a dismal end of the day it was going to be, but I decided to grab my camera and go out anyway to see what I could find.Editing
This is pretty much straight out-of-the-camera. The colors and textures were perfect enough that no major post-processing was needed.In my camera bag
These days, my main camera is a Canon 7D, and it usually has the Canon 70-300mm IS II USM lens on it. I've gotten into older lenses in recent months, so I may have two or three of the old circa 1970s lenses in my backpack, and use one of them depending on what I find to shoot, and the mood I'm looking for at the time.Feedback
My best advice is to grab the camera and go outside. You never know what you'll find to shoot, and I can guarantee you'll never find something as cool as this sunset if you're sitting at home.
