I shot this at 10mm because I wanted the drilling rigs to be larger in the frame and at the same tine get the whole bird.. At 10mm I was right on top of the young bird. He was a little uncomfortable but OK until I got about 18 inches from him, then he opened his bill and tapped me on the top of the head with it. It wasn’t a vicious hit – partly out of curiosity about the camera and partly to let me know that I was close enough. I backed up a couple of inches, continued shooting and he was happy.
This is not a “tame” bird, but some pelicans have figured out that, if they hang around on fishing piers, the fisherman will feed them scraps.
