I drove to Anza Borrego National Park to photograph the dessert sculptures on a hot summer night. Alone, I arrived at my planned location and began to shoot my chosen sculpture. However, after about 30 minutes, a large 4x4 truck drove towards my location and since I was in a secluded spot, I knew the driver was coming straight to me. Not wanting to be a woman caught alone in the middle of the dessert, late at night, I threw my equipment into the back of my jeep and drove to my secondary location. I spent an hour driving off road looking for my subject, but I couldn't find it and I was losing my vertical Milky Way time window. Then I found this horse. A beautify white owl was perched on him until my headlights caught him and scared him away. As I was taking the long exposure photos I practiced some meditation to pass the time. It felt magical being out there alone, with nature, the owl, Milky Way, and this horse. This photo captured the moment perfectly.

Behind The Lens

Location
Anza Borrego National Park, California
Time
12:20 AM
Lighting
I used a flashlight to paint the horse sculpture with light to make it appear to be luminated by the Milky Way.
Equipment
Nikon D3400 with a Tokina 11-16 f2.8
Inspiration
I drove out into the dessert alone to find one of many metal sculptures ti use as a forefront in a milky way shot. I left my original location because a huge, lifted truck pulled up next to me. The driver was probably there to get the same vertical Milky Way photo I was trying to capture, but I didn't intend to be discovered as a woman all alone in the middle of the desert, late at night. So I threw my equipment in the jeep and drove to my back up location. I spent almost an hour driving off road, looking for a certain dinosaur sculpture, but settled on this horse because I liked him. Not to mention, I was losing my vertical window.
Editing
I used lightroom to enhance the photo, but used minimal adjustments.
In my camera bag
I use my Nikon 24-120 everywhere i go because it's so universal, but depending on the shoot, I’ll carry other lenses as back up.
