Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at some friend’s beach house backyard, at Cahuita Beach – Costa Rica in July, 2017. I started as a self-taught photographer and now I’m a New York Institute of Photography student. No matter if it’s about settings or post-processing, every image I take is a new lesson for me, and that is what makes each photograph special for me.

Time

This is one of my best night sky image. I remember it was about 11:30pm and I’s sitting in the backyard. After raining all the day long the sky was still a little cloudy, but suddenly, it starts to get cleaner and cleaner until being completely cloudless. I had already stored all my gear but quickly I got it back and set the camera for a nice night sky shot session. I took a lot of pictures because I also love night sky time-lapses.

Lighting

Well, since it is a night sky photograph obviously, there was not much light at 11:30pm. So, I got a fast and wide lens and set the wider possible aperture for starting setting the camera. It was a low light pollution area, so that helped a lot for the session.

Equipment

For this picture, I used my Nikon D810 with a Rokinon 14mm f2.8. The camera was mounted on a steady tripod and also, I used a wireless remote shutter. The photograph was taken at f/2.8, 30 sec, ISO-1600 at 14mm focal length.

Inspiration

The night sky is always an inspiration for me. I love the stars, the moon and the northern lights. I’ve been in Fairbanks, Alaska twice only for shooting the Aurora Borealis. So, when I was at the beach far away of light pollution I was just waiting for a clean sky for getting some images. I stayed awake until the time the Milk-Way should be right over me because I was in a place rounded be trees, so there was no way for shooting a landscape. I only had a window in the sky where I was able to see the Milk-Way.

Editing

I only used Lightroom for light, contrast and brightness adjustments. I tried to push up the blue tones, because it is the color I like most for night sky photographs.

In my camera bag

I never leave home without carrying my gear pack. The first thing into my bag is my all-in-one Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5:5.6. With that lens, at 28mm I can take wide angle landscapes and scenes, and the lens length range allows me also to take nice portrait at 85mm as well zooming birds and other kind on nature stuff at 200mm or 300mm. Then comes both my Nikon FX D810 and D610 bodies. If I am about to shoot sports or wildlife I included my Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Contemporary Version for getting even closer to the action. And to complete the pack, I also include my Tamrom 180mm f/3.5 1:1 lens for macro photography, my Rokinon 14mm f2.8 for wide angles, and my Opteka 6.5mm f/3.5 fish eye lens. Also, I never forget the two spare batteries, tripod, additional memory cards, a wireless remote shooter and the Yongnuo YN685 speedlight flash.

Feedback

For me, shooting the night sky is one of the best sort of photography. If you are thinking about taking pictures like those my advises are the same anyone can easily find out around the internet, youtube and thousands of photography pages and blogs. Get a fast wide angle lens, a tripod and a remote shutter (cabled or wireless) for reducing shaking.
