A mushroom's gills are where spores develop and are eventually dispersed from (correct me if I got that wrong somehow). Gills offer up important clues for identification as well. Shape, depth, color, stem attachment are just a few of the things that can be used for ID. For me the most fascinating part of mushrooms is that they are the fruiting body of a much larger organism hidden from view. Mushrooms are just the reproductive part we see of a fungus working its magic turning dead matter into soil. Often these fungi are working in symbiosis with the plants around them for their mutual benefit.
