Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a school trip as a chaperone, sitting on the bus behind my granddaughter. When she was looking out of the window, and pressing her nose up against the glass. I just managed to get the camera in the gap between our seats and captured the moment. Geographical location: Kelsall, Cheshire, England.

Time

It was a bit of a dull overcast mid-afternoon.

Lighting

The bus was going down quite a dark lane with high hedges on either side. This accentuated the clarity of the reflection in the bus window. Some metallic surfaces in the bus were throwing back reflected light.

Equipment

I had just got a new Canon EOS 1300D and was using just the kit lens. This was one of my first pictures using it.

Inspiration

The children were all very excited about their first day out, this was the reception class so they were all 4-5 yr olds. The novelty of the bus and being out of school was making them all very inquisitive and energetic. I tried to take images through the narrow gaps between the seats to avoid posed pictures and ‘face-pulling’ and get images of spontaneous curiosity and wonder.

Editing

Experimented with some filters, but can’t remember exactly what I finally used. I tend to play around a bit and see what works.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 1300D, my old Panasonic LUMIX DMC FZ72, Sigma lens 150-600mm, spare batteries, tripod.

Feedback

I think it was mainly waiting to catch a moment that expressed the excitement and novelty of the occasion, the wonder of childhood and magic of discovery. Catching children unaware isn’t easy, but keeping unseen and working from behind an obstacle can result in something unusual and special. The reflection worked well because the bus passed through a dark lane, close to the hedges, yet the level of daylight from above was adequate, despite the slow moving bus.
