Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in Melbourne, Australia and features Alice Axnick. It is a studio photo.

Time

Taken late afternoon/early evening with all the window blinds shut to darken the room.

Lighting

The photograph is taken with 3 lights and a reflector. A 30 degree grid with magenta gel above to the left to illuminate Alice's head, a stripbox with grid as kicker to right, a silver reflector to bounce the kicker light on to Alice's back and finally a stripbox backlight directly behind Alice with a linear polarisation filter covering it. The backlight is invisible due to a polarising filter on the lens rotated to 90 degrees in relation to the backlight (becomes invisible). This creates a cross-polarising light field to demonstrate birefringence.

Equipment

Bowens 1000w/s x1, Bowens 500w/s x2, Godox stripbox x2, e-bay grids and gels, lee polarising filter, scientific linear polarising film, Pentax K3 and Pentax-DA 50-135mm/2.8 lens, body-length reflector.

Inspiration

As I am a medical doctor, we utilise the technique of cross polarisation to visualise gout crystals under a microscope. I loved the beautiful array of colours that this would give and wondered if it could be "supersized" with a model to make art. This was the result.

Editing

As Alice is backlit, there were some powercords on the floor that were visible. These were removed. The colouring in the plastic is real- not post-processed. There are some balancing of contrast, shadows and highlights to get the right mood.

In my camera bag

These days I carry a Pentax K1 and a 645z. I prefer mostly primes and carry a 31mm LTD, 50mm, 105mm, and a 200mm. I may carry a 600mm if I have a vehicle.

Feedback

Start out experimenting with plastics in front of your laptop screen with a white background (the screen has polarising film over it) and a polarising filter on your lens. After you master the basics, go big!
