Location
I took this photo close to my house in L'Ile Tudy, (Bretagne, France).Time
This photo was taken just before the night during the blue hourLighting
Best photos are taken at magic light hours (blue hour, golden light, or night). At this time of the day the light was really soft and produced soft sahdow on the subject.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D mark III. The shot was taken on a tripod, and I was testing my new neutral density filter. The effect on the sea was achieved with a long exposure time of 4 minutesInspiration
The inspiration of the photo came from the lighthouse itself, as it has a checkerboard. I wanted to achieve the same effect with the sky/sea.Editing
I processed this photo in Photoshop. I removed some distraction on the right, and also added a graduated filter in the sky to accentuate the contrast. I made a manual selection of the lighthouse to apply the filter to the sky without affecting the lighthouse. In my camera bag
I generally have a wide angle lens, like the canon 24-70mm 2.8, and my 70-200mm 2.8. Also I always take some neutral density filters, as well as a Polarized filter. Additionnaly, I take my tripod depending on the place where I go.Feedback
Sometimes the simple is the best, photography needn't to be complex. It is always good to have a simple background and to remove all distraction of the composition. Symmetry is good in minimalism, but lots of other composition can work. The idea is to visualise the lines, (imaginary o real ones) when you compose. Also the neutral filter helps to remove distrataction as all the movement of the sea are soften.
