Location
This photo was taken in Helsingør (Elsinore) in Denmark, and the photo is of the Kronborg Castle which in its current form was built in the 15-1600. It has roots further back and used to be a customs collecting point for the Danish kings controlling the access to and from the Baltic Sea. At the time, the Southern part of Sweden, was Danish too and with the castle Kärnan on the other side of the Oresund strait, there was nothing else to do than pay or get shot at. Furthermore it is the origin of the story about Hamlet. Guided tours are held all year around.Time
This shot was taken at full moon around midnight.Lighting
All natural lighting from the moon from above and from the the ground lever huge flood lights were illuminating the castle.Equipment
Shot with Nikon D4s, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR at 70mm f/6.3 using one of my Manfrotto tripods. Aperture was 6.3 at ISO 200.Inspiration
It was actually the flood lights illuminating the the castle from the opposite direction that made me want to photograph the castle in the first place since I have passed the place many times, but most during day hours. This shot was taken on the way home from another photo shoot by the beaches of Northern Zealand. It sort of just popped up in front of me. So something similar had been planned in my mind, but this was a "lucky to be at the right spot at the right time" situation. I am grateful I was there.Editing
The post processing done on this shot is sharpening, contrast, and a little adjustment on the dynamic range. Color enhancement is five on a scale from plus to minus one hundred. For my post processing in general I am using Capture One.In my camera bag
The bag is always my biggest problem when I am going somewhere. Abroad or domestic. Same problem. So I usually bring it all. Cameras: Nikon D3, D4s. Lenses: Nikon 60mm f/2.8D, 14-24mm f/2.8G, 28-70mm f/2.8D, 70-300mm f/2.8G VR and 300mm f/2.8 VR Teleconverters: Nikon TC1.7 II and TC 2.0 III Flash: Nikon SB-900 (the rest stays at home) Manfrotto monopod and tripods Light meterFeedback
First of all patience. Second, don't go with someone....especially if they don't share your interest. If you see a subject, note the time of day you are there and come back another time if you don't have your gear with you. Or revisit to see the subject in various light or weather conditions. If you have your smart phone with you, make a snap so you remember the exact location and the situation as you saw it the first time. Or use you GPS to remember at location. Try to imagine what you want your shot to look like. Depending on the time of year, I should always bring warm clothing. Gear.......the most essential is the tripod.
