Western ghats is famous for frogs and reptiles. During monsoon season if you take a walk in the night you will hear the calls made by frogs, sometimes you will spot two males fighting for territory or witness the mating pairs. The female frog is about 10 cm in length and the male is much smaller, as you see in this picture. This hold is called as amplexus hold, and the male will be attached to the female until the eggs are layed. Typically, they choose a tree branch where the water is running underneath, so that the tadpoles can jump into water once they are developed. Due to deforestation of rain forests, these frogs were found on a lotus pond searching for a spot to lay eggs. The male frog will help female to produce the eggs and provides a support by holding them, both these frogs will create a foam structure and eggs are protected. Next day morning we could spot the foam, which was neatly covered and these frogs were resting in the nearby leaves. It takes two to three hours to lay eggs.
