Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a harbor cruise around the San Francisco Bay in the Summer of 2017. The boat came under the Golden Gate.

Time

It was taken mid-morning. Between 10-12. It was a clear day and no sign of fog or overcast. It was in the middle of summer in the middle of July.

Lighting

Being it was mid morning. I had no tools to use such as early morning light or afternoon shadow to give it any special effect. I converted to black and white. Black and white gives it an old fashion type of look. Being the bridge is old and a historical landmark.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS Rebel. With a telephoto lens with a range between 70-200 mm. I was leaning against a railing on the boat to keep the lens steady. No tripod or flash because it was middle of the morning.

Inspiration

I have taken many photos of the Golden Gate from different angles, as many other photographers. I never really seen the bridge from below like this. So I took the opportunity to take the photo, I was trying to show somewhat of a depth of field look. I hope more people try taking the bridge photo at this angle.

Editing

I did a lot of cropping and lighting changes. I wanted to show the size of the bridge and also its closeness. I removed a ;to of the extra space taken in the original photo, I narrowed it to show the size and the architectural form.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon EOS Rebel. Four lenses. My 16-55 mm, my Sigma Wide angle 10-20mm lens and my two telephoto lenses 70-200mm and 70-300mm. I carry various lens hoods and and several filters and cleaning materials.

Feedback

Be patient and wait for the right shot. If taking city scales it also fun to see the landmark or building that is going to captures someone's eye. Try different ways of taking photos from different angles rather than the same areas everyone does.
