This image captured at a local marsh here in Nanaimo British Columbia. It is a Western Tanager male. These neo-tropical birds migrate to southern B.C. from Costa Rica in the summer time to breed. The coloration is caused by their diet during the mating season which consists mainly of a type of insect that provides the Rhodoxanthin pigment turning their heads red. Females pick a mate based on how red his head is because he will be the best insect provider for their young. After the end of the breeding season males revert back to their default yellow coloring.
