Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the tulip festival in Woodbury, Oregon. I had all of 3 minutes to set this up and shoot it. Unfortunately, my model had forgot her allergy medicine and as soon as we got there, she started suffering severely. She was literally forcing her eyes to stay open for this shot. It only takes on good image though so I feel it was worth the drive. This shot was really all about clicking the shutter at the right moment, not posed but very candid and she wasn’t expecting it.

Time

The worst time of day! About 2pm and the lighting conditions were very bright with absolutely no shade or clouds. Beautiful to most people but not a photographer’s friend. I made it up for using some fill flash, which was hard as it had to over power the sun to be effective, but IG was just enough to fill in a little shadow and not look overflashed.

Lighting

I let the shadows help create more of a mood and the lighting also boosted the colors dramatically.

Equipment

Nikon D300s with a 70-200 VR 2.8

Inspiration

I just loved the colors and her skin and hair really pop against the red background.

Editing

I did little in the way of post except sharpening a bit.

In my camera bag

Nikon D850 Sigma Art 24-70mm, Nikon nikkor 85mm macro prime, Nikon 70-200 VRII, a Minolta light meter, a off camera flash for emergency lighting situations, and extra batteries always!

Feedback

Just knowing when to click the shutter is key to the success of a candid shot such as this.
