Bacnotan is a small town located in the northern part of the Philippines. The western part stretches along the shore of South China Sea. The beaches are suitable for fishing, boating, swimming, snorkeling and surfing. 10-20 years ago, this town’s fishing industry is one of the number source of income. But due to urbanization and progressive growth of technology, advanced fishing systems were introduced. Fishermen capitalize on their empirical knowledge passed from one generation to another, but this is not enough to sustain or overcome the advancement of the new generation. As urban fishing communities have been experiencing the breakdown of this tradition due to opportunities offered to youths to seek other ways of life as well as urban pressures that further hinder the perpetuation of fishing practices.
But despite industrialization, several of the households still manage to maintain this living. Male or female, old or young, they have atleast the basic knowledge on how to catch sea products. Fishing goes beyond a mere work activity and constitutes a way of life corresponding to social aspects that follow a behavioral pattern in this community. Who would not love fresh fish for dinner?
