Wow! Nice capture! I love the composition here - the flower and the bird are positioned perfectly, and the lighting is really well done. And focus is spot on. I'm looking for something to suggest for improvement, but I can't find anything. Great work!

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in our backyard in Illinois. We have spent years building Hummingbird Gardens. This is a wild honeysuckle vine that we have in one area of the garden. Not only do our gardens provide hours of entertainment, it provides food and shelter for various types of birds.
Time
This image was taken during the late morning hours on a bright and sunny day. I like to use a fast shutter speed to freeze motion. This shot required a lot of light as I do not use a flash. I had to position myself in an area where I wasn't sitting in the sun and wanted to be somewhat hidden from the Hummingbirds. Quite often my neighbors ask me why I sit with my camera for hours on end staring at a bush, that's how you get the shots though.
Lighting
Late morning, full sun.
Equipment
I used a Canon 1dx and a Canon 300mm F2.8. I shot this image hand held.
Inspiration
Hummingbirds and fascinating creatures. They put on quite a show and I can watch them for hours on end.
Editing
I did some sharpening on the image and cropped it in a bit. I try to get it right in camera and not rely on post processing too much.
In my camera bag
I normally have extra batteries, a tripod and or monopod. I also bring a wide angle lens and a prime lens with me. This depends on my mood and the subject I am trying to acquire.
Feedback
You don't need a 1dx to capture a photograph like this. What you need are good light and patience patience patience. I good light, you can still up your shutter speed, minding the ISO setting for noise. Taking the time to learn the birds behavior is also very helpful. I did shoot this image hand held but I prefer to use a gimbal head tripod, you need to be sturdy for tack sharp images. You don't have to shoot at a fast shutter speed if you want to show motion in the wings. Keep in mind that a Hummingbirds wings are extremely fast and the birds often move like lightning. Be patient and don't give up!
