Behind The Lens

Location

Sandilands, Manitoba, Canada

Time

10:30 a.m.

Lighting

I was afraid that the sun was too high in the sky for the dramatic backlight I was wanting, but then I found this hill sloping upward and knew that it would bring the horizon to just the place it needed to be.

Equipment

Nikon D750 with a 24-70mm 2.8 lens

Inspiration

My boys are my everything. I wanted so badly to capture their beautiful friendship, but they're usually so busy running around that it's hard to find an opportunity. So when I caught them sitting next to each other on this log I just had to capture the moment!

Editing

Yes. Edited in Lightroom. Used curves to add dramatic contrast, a bit of clarity to soften the trees, and warmed up the highlights.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, 24-70mm 2.8 lens, 50mm 1.8 lens, sb 700 speed light, rain guard, extra memory cards and batteries.

Feedback

I almost never get the kind of shot I'm hoping for if I just have my camera in my backpack waiting for the right moment - I usually need to make a moment happen, especially with kids. Because of this, I am either photographing my kids in a kind of mini photo shoot, or I am running around and playing with them. I find it hard to truly and fully do both at the same time.
