I knew I wanted to get a shot of this popular obelisk, but I didn’t want to just copy Ansel Adams' framing. So I let the scene speak to me.

Being part Asian-American, this is a very meaningful, personal and symbolic shot to me. You can see the sun illuminating the stone tower (representing our Past) dedicated to the 150 individuals who died while held — against their will — in the internment camp here.

I shot very wide to exaggerate the monument’s imposing shadow (representing our Current), contrasting nicely with the obelisk’s size and helping to illustrate that we still live in the shadow of our Past.

What represents the Future? That’s for us to decide together.
