Burrowing owls don't exactly sit in oaks, but rather build their nests in underground burrows made by ground squirrels, hence their name. Typically night hunters, they can also be seen hanging around their burrows during the day. Sadly, they are dwindling in numbers due to loss of habitat. These beauties were photographed in a protected fenced-in field in an industrial area at the south end of San Francisco Bay in Alviso, near San Jose, California.
