Location
This photo was taken in a park near my house in Seattle, Washington. I can't remember the name nor do I know if it even has one. It's down a long dark alley in a neighborhood that leads into massive thicket of tall trees and vines.Time
It was taken in the late morning around 11 a.m. It was a fairly sunny day but the trees where massive and provided excellent shade!Lighting
I wanted it to be overcast, so as I said above the trees providing the shade gave me that effect. I wanted the raw image to have a overall flatness to it so that when I got to post I would have more lighting options to play with.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark 4 with a Canon 24-70mm L series 4.0 Tripod was provided by Bonfoto (Carbon Fiber B671C) Besides that, just a remote to fire the self timer and a lot of baby powder.Inspiration
I have a show on Youtube called PhotoForge. In the show I teach people how to create the photos I shoot. This photo specifically was the "Powder Photography" episode in which I teach how to shoot powder photos. I wanted to add some surrealism to it, as opposed to it just being baby powder floating. I wanted to implement an element that felt unique, and I've always had an obsession with the opening of Pandora's box. Once it's opened it cannot be closed. In this photo, our subject is opening Pandora's box, releasing it's hidden mysteries.Editing
Yes this Photo has a significant amount of post processing. Down to the fact, I took the subject's face from another photo from this shoot, and placed it on this one because I liked the pose more. The bird is added as well then blended using a powder style brush. The coloring was primarily done through multiple selective color layers in photoshop. In my camera bag
I usually carry a smaller bag, you never really know the terrain you are going to face when you go out exploring so I like to be light on my feet. My bag usually consists of my Canon 5D, a 24-70mm Canon L Series 4.0, self remote, three ND filters, multiple memory cards, a small Remington Knife, a lighter and some string!Feedback
If you are going to implement a bird or other element that's not part of your picture originally, know what it will be before hand. Know the lighting of the element so you can apply that knowledge during your shoot, to do your best to match it. Also, do be afraid to try the powder shot as many times as you can, it took me about 15 takes before I got the shot I knew was going to be the one! :)
