If the engine were cut, we would have heard just the crackling of slowly melting ice in this ultimate of serene locations.

My friends climb a hill of pulverised volcanic rock inside the volcanically active Deception Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula.

This near symmetrical melting would have occurred before the berg flipped over - something that we witnessed elsewhere in our Antarctic expedition.
