Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on a walkabout in an abandoned Air Force Base. The Base had been used for RAF training in Canada during WW2 and was decommissioned in the 60s I believe. From then it and all the buildings - mostly wood - have slowly deteriorated in the Canadian weather. This was a shuttered window from one of the buildings - whilst the glass was still intact, the wood had weathered to the extreme and alongside paint fragments, moss and lichen had latched onto the wood. This gave a wonderful overall effect and made for a terrific image.

Time

It was around 2pm - it was a generally grey day (it was late September) with clouds, not much sunshine. The light therefore was very diffuse.

Lighting

As the day was very cloudy & the shot was taken at around 2pm, the light was very diffuse. So there were no real shadows to contend with or exposure issues.

Equipment

My Nikon D3300; 18-55mm lens f/3.5-5.6; 1/100 sec shutter speed; Handheld; No flash; f/11 @55mm; No other equipment.

Inspiration

The abandoned Air Force Base was a rich find for photographs and I spent a couple of hours wandering around - with permission - to take images of the abandoned buildings as well as those buildings that have been reclaimed and renovated as the Base is slowly being converted to a business park. The textures on the wood framed buildings were fantastic as were the structures themselves, some in various forms of collapse.

Editing

Absolutely minimal post-processing - contrast/exposure (fine adjustments); highlights/shadows; textures/clarity all tweaked in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I usually have my 55-200mm Zoom in addition to the list I mentioned earlier. I also often have my tripod, my remote and a set of filters, usually for macro-type work. I include in my bag a lens cleaning kit, an extra battery (very important) and occasionally my ring-flash.

Feedback

Explore anything and everything that catches your imagination - the Base was like a candy store, I almost didn't know where to start taking images, there were so many excellent options. So keep your eyes open for anything that affords a special opportunity and don't be afraid to simple ask for permission to take images.
