Location
This shot was taken in Portland Oregon. Just down the street from the photo studio there was a train yard. It was impromptu.Time
It was sunset a little high just before magic hour.Lighting
The lighting wasn't optimal; harsh really on the highlights as I had her facing forward styled with the hat for sun glare; I shoot manual and I think this was my manual Zeiss Distagon 35mm 2.0 (not totally sure but tonally it looks like it). I was fiddling and looked up and she was taking off her hat and facing the opposite way to rest her eyes from glare, I looked up and shot a quick 2-3 shot sequence that I liked the most out of the session.Equipment
Canon 5D mark II, either a Zeiss 35mm Distagon or the Canon 50mm 1.2 USM (most likely the Zeiss though). I used a a reflector here most likely balanced on my foot to knee pointing from the ground up.Inspiration
It wasn't going well or as planned, so it's really an outtake or BTSEditing
Yes Lightroom. Most likely from memory and/or habit. Up the contrast, drop the highlights (for sky and skin) and lessened the shadows. I'm sure I cropped at least a little bit. I might have upped the clarity but I don't think I knew about that then, same for noise....In my camera bag
Presently I"m full freelance in San Diego but I have to be able to shoot everything so my bag is full, ha; Canon 5d Mark III and nd a backup Mark II that just keeps. going. Lenses: Canon 50mm 1.2, Canon 70-200mm USM II, Zeiss distagons 18mm and 35mm. Silver and gold reflector foldable, Largle collapsable reflector + diffusion. I use the Holdlfast Harness with everything. Zeiss and Holdfast as brands can handle my brutality with gear in general (seriously, from the jungle to avenues and alleyways). Canon bodies as well - no joke the mark 2 has been cracked down the center of the body for 2 years and still keeps shooting ( you can see inside it).Feedback
Shooting into the sunset, especially for swimsuit or something like this. offset the subject a little bit (sky and buildings bounces light back onto a subject) or wait for a bit of cloud cover or diffusion on the subject (high clouds are actually good for portraiture and contrast - low clouds not so much). I check light and contrast by sticking my hand out using the top of them to manually eyeball the best directional natural light/bounce - I do this all the time... and peeps pick it up from me - don't know if it would work for everyone... Use a reflector with combined silver and gold not just gold (makes it a bit too yellow or orange, for me at least). When possible base your choice of model and wardrobe tonally based on the tones in the environment - don't know if I meant to do that here but I think blonde hair helped for a bit of pop and lighter clothes as well. I'm a wardrobe stylist as well so I use this for effect constantly now in my photography, tones...
