Wild native Pacific Rhododendrons are rare on Vancouver Island. They can only be found in two locations on the whole Island and Rhododendron Lake, south of Parksville, is one of them. The lake is on private forestland owned by Island Timberlands, 13 km down a logging road and a short hike from the trailhead. It is a peaceful, pristine location that has protected status and is surrounded by clear cuts of Cedar, Fir and Hemlock stands. The Pacific Rhododendron is much more common in the state of Washington where it was adopted as the state flower but, to me, having fewer here makes them seem more precious.

What a great discovery to find this lake and especially the beautiful flowers. Great story.
