This is an an amazing image. It captures an event, yes, but is so much more, the flaming figure, the trees in the background, the log building.... This si why looking at photographs from so many other places and cutures is so interesting. There are some photographers like yourself who really capture the heart of things. Very nice!

I find this photo VERY Offensive. This may be at a festival but at first glance I see a Muslim figure on fire!

This photo depicts Maslenitsa - a national Russian festival. The figure on fire is a straw scarecrow dressed in the traditional Russian clothes (the ones, that Russian women used to wear before the reforms of Peter the Great). It symbolizes winter and is being ritually burned to mark the return of spring. Maslenitsa celebrates the end of winter and the beginning of the agricultural season (a very important time for medieval Russia, as population mostly consisted of peasants at that time). Maslenitsa takes part every year, six weeks before Orthodox Easter. So, despite the photo may look offensive at the first glance, its true meaning is purely ethnographical.
