Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the balcony of my home in Athens, Greece, during the last very hot day. Me and my wife were having fun and a very cold cup of coffee after work, while relaxing under the sun.

Time

It was at about 3 pm. The sun in Athens is sometimes exhausting, but after the previous rainy day, this was a perfect time for relax.

Lighting

Only sunlight. Direct and harsh.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 550d and the kit lens 18-55mm f3.5, turned at around 35mm. Well I got something more than 40mm. I wanted to be near the 50mm equivalent of a full frame camera.

Inspiration

I tend to get inspiration from everywhere. I look at other peoples work. I think it does not matter if someone is a pro or not. Every photograph has its own story and depicts something different. For some they might be inspiring, for some not. Anyway I was looking at some street photographs, when I bumped into some where the subject was shot from a (very) low angle, thus giving a different perspective, much more depth and space in photography. So I followed these examples, since I found them really pleasing in my eyes. I had this whole process in my the back of my head and kinda hoped for the right moment to come. I don't like rushing into things, so I try to apply some techniques when the time is right. I think that "natural" moments are always better than "staged" ones. Oh and I can't forget mentioning music. Music inspires. Whatever music feels good to you. And lyrics. They can be inspirational from times to times. The title of this picture is inspired from an old dnb track called "Summer breeze" by DJ Aphrodite. It fitted in my mind at that moment!

Editing

For sure. I basically changed the colors to have this summer/vintage look I had in mind(I hope i got it right) and added some sharpness in the photo.

In my camera bag

I don't have a camera bag. And if I did it would be kinda empty, since I'm stuck with the kit lens. It doesn't always suit me, but I cannot do something else right now. I wish I could get the 24mm f2.8 sometime soon, since I like street photography and the 35mm equivalent, and this one is fast and small, so I guess it could be helpful. I also have an old Nikon 50mm f1.8 from my fathers old Nikon film camera, but I don't use it quite often, because it's near 80mm in my Canon and its kinda hard to focus on something really quick.

Feedback

The main point of this technique is to have something from the subject in the foreground near the camera (as is the hand in my picture) and the rest of the subject further away from the camera. And a wide angle lens should be used for best results.
