The octopus, tako, or he'e...whatever you prefer to call it, it is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. They are such an intelligent species and all seem to have different personalities.

I was lucky enough to intercept this one while it was moving between reef patches, and the shape it took is one of the most incredible moments of nature that I have ever witnessed first hand!

There are three reasons I love photographing the octopus-
1. They don't make it super easy for you.
2. Watching their color and texture patters change so quickly is incredible to witness.
3. It seems that no matter how many you observe, occasionally they will surprise you with a shape you haven't seen before, just like this one!!

I found the timing of witnessing this flower shape on this particular octopus very amusing. This was taken on Maui. The same week I took this, there was a sunflower field in full bloom that was a test run for biodiesel fuel, and EVERYONE was photographing and posting pictures of the sunflowers. I joked that this octopus had to change up it's bag of tricks in order to get some attention that week!
