Behind The Lens

This photo was taken in Oliwia's kitchen, located in Gothenburg, Sweden.
We shot this in the afternoon while the sun was blasting through the windows, It was a very bright and warm day. I altered the blinds around the apartment to get the desired ambient light and used a speedlight as kicker.
We already had an idea of what we wanted to accomplish. As I stated about time of day, I wanted the daylight to give me options by regulating the blinds and then I used a speedlight on a stand, bouncing into a silver umbrella to get the hard kicker highlights. I underexposed in the camera to get the desired results.
When shooting this, I had my Canon 5D mkIV with an ST-E3-RT attached, to fire a Speedlight 600EX II-RT into a silver umbrella. Other than that it was natural light bursting in from the windows. I don't like tripods when shooting model photography. Only when doing beautyshots or portraits. But I think it often comes in the way of creativity.
I'm inspired by strong women who knows what they want and are not afraid of doing what they do, and never make excuses for it. The inspiration came from the conversations we had, and to portray a strong, sexy and beautiful woman who doesn't take shit from no one.
Most of the post processing in this case was done in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw). Looking at it now I struggle to notice what I did in Photoshop, but I always bring in my photos in PS, so I'm sure I did something there besides adding some overall grain. Looking carefully I see that I did some very subtle dodge&burn as well.
In my camera bag
I lug around my backpack most of the times. I always make sure to bring extra batteries (of all kinds), memory cards and my speedlight with transmitter. There's always a few other things in there as well like ND filters and the ever so important cleaning cloth. Knowing all the basics is intact I either bring my Canon 5D mk IV, or my old trusty Canon 5D mk II which I can't stop using. My absolute favorite glass is the 24-70mm 2.8L and it's on for at least 70% of all my images. Depending on what I'm going to do, I always bring a second glass as well, it differs from Canon's TS24 mm 3.5L, to 100 mm macro 2.8L, 50 mm 1.4, 35 mm 2.0, 70-200 mm 2.8L to bringing toy lense such as Lensbaby Composer with funny aperture discs. My other lenses are very seldom used. However the 16-35 mm 2.8L is hard to replace when shooting landscapes and outdoor sceneries.
Oil baby... use oil. Really, I think you have to know what to look for, and you'll see it in the camera while shooting. If it's not there, you'll never get the end results. Sometimes you can use photoshop to bring your ideas to where you want them to be, but other times - like this - if it's not done right you can't really save it in post. When doing this type of photo, I like to underexpose the shot. And then in post I can regulate exposure and push the highlights in the raw editor. That way the highlights are not totally blown out. Of course you end up with a tad more noise, but I even add extra grain because it fits the feeling.
