I captured this photo from the summit of Mount Eden in Central Auckland, its the highest of 53 volcanoes within the city!Time
I woke up for sunrise with the intention of heading to one of my local beaches. I stepped out the door to the sight (or lack of) of thick fog. I immediately knew where I wanted to go and try my luck. There really is no guarantee that the fog would be lower than the summit or even the sky tower itself. I guess it paid off!Lighting
I was really hoping that the fog would break at sunrise, as time went by I was still in thick fog on the summit but waited it out. This was actually half an hour after sunrise as the fog slowly lowered to reveal the view, it was so lucky that the light was still soft and golden!Equipment
This was captured on an Olympus OMD EM1-mkii with the 40-150 f2.8 PRO lens.Inspiration
I had seen a couple of fog shots across Auckland city before and really wanted to get something myself. Most shots I have seen were wide angle but I really wanted to use a telephoto to get the full impact of the tower and give it a floating above the clouds feel.Editing
I intended to use an ND filter but with the moisture in the air it was just not possible. So to counteract this I took multiple exposures and blended them in post production to get the shot I desired. Lightroom and photoshop, I have a timelapse of the event that I'm going to edit soon!In my camera bag
I carry an F stop Sukha with my main camera a Canon 5D mk3, Canon 16-35 f2.8 II, Canon 24-105 f4 and the Canon 100-400 I. My second camera is an Olympus OMD EM1-ii with the 7-14 f2.8, 12-40 f2.8, 40-150 f2.8 and the 25 f1.2 PRO lenses. I then have Nisi ND filters, cables, batteries, mosquito repellent, cloths, umbrella, rain jacket and a couple of tripods.... yep its heavy hahaFeedback
I think you just have to get out and try! You can't predict conditions from home, you just have to go out and have a go. You've gotta be in it to win it.
