Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Lake Jocassee, a 7,565 acre lake created when Duke Energy dammed 5 mountain rivers in Jocassee Valley. The only public access is via Devils Fork State Park, located in upstate South Carolina. I live in Indiana, but since 2004 I've made an almost yearly trip, along with my sister, to my 'home away from home' on the shores of Jocassee

Time

Believe it or not, this was taken during 'photographers nemesis' - lol, that is, midday :) We were supposed to check out of our cabin that morning, but at the last minute, decided to extend our stay. Which meant we now needed to do laundry, lol. So while the clothes were in the washer at the campground, we (my sister and I) went down to play around the lake until it finished

Lighting

With the editing software that we have available these days, and a little imagination, we can compensate for less than ideal lighting conditions.

Equipment

My camera is a Fuji Finepix HS20, which I carefully propped up and balanced on rocks (and my sister's sock, lol)

Inspiration

While my sister went to check the laundry, I was left alone to amuse myself. I was sitting staring across the lake at the distant mountains, reflecting on life, and just kind of letting my mind wander across the waves, and I just felt a pull to wander with them, and I felt that having my shoes/socks in the foreground would lend to the feeling of 'leaving it all behind'

Editing

Yes! It's probably obvious that this is a composite. The rising moon had been shot the night before from a high vantage point overlooking the lake. I hadn't intended to include it in the composition when I started editing it, but as I tried compensating for the hazy (and boring!) midday lighting, I added a burn layer to darken/add contrast to the sky, and I noticed it gave it a nighttime feel, and my imagination took off and I knew I had to bring the moon into the scene. I use PS CS4 to bring it all together.

In my camera bag

Just the camera (Fuji Finepix HS20) a spare set of batteries (I like Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries as they hold charge well even after setting a long time) and if I think that far ahead, a lens cloth (as it seems I ALWAYS have water spots on my lens!!) That's really all I ever carry. I wish I would get a decent tripod and start using it, but I guess you could say I'm actually pretty lazy (more of an opportunistic shooter) and I hate being encumbered carrying a lot of stuff

Feedback

Let go. When you're exploring. When you're shooting. When you're editing. Let you imagination and emotion lead you. Quite often when I'm finished with an image, I have to say, that's not what I had in mind when I started, but I usually love the end result more than what I had planned for it. Sometimes its good to have a plan and stick to it, but sometimes its good to just let the image lead you where IT wants to go :) It's a journey, do your best to enjoy the ride!!
