Bryde’s whales are resident on the South African coastline and move pretty quickly, not staying at the surface for too long. This one was feeding on anchovies a couple of kilometres off Cape Point. Average size is 13-14 metres in length.

Fire and Water

Caught this Black-headed heron on take off. Usually they fly away from the camera but this one turned into the breeze allowing a much better view.

Thunderstorms are not a common phenomenon in Cape Town, so I was really happy to have captured this storm over False Bay.

Striated Herons are ambush predators, and can sit for ages waiting for a meal. Sometimes they stalk around to see what they can flush out of the grass

The European roller is the only member of the rollers to breed in Europe, it’s overall range extends into the Middle East, Central Asia and Morocco.

A Sooty shearwater glides across a section of ocean, the surface of which is barely ruffled by the breeze.

In the winter these owls seem to prolong their hunting a little, which allows for a flight shot now and again.
